Xcelris Labs wants to be a one-stop shop for drug cos

CLARIS Lifesciences-promoted contract research company, Xcelris Labs, is planning to develop its business into a one-stop centre for pharma majors. The company, which intends to tap the booming research, segment is planning to enter into tie-ups with major international companies in biotech research and contract manufacturing.

Xcelris Labs, with its core competence in contract research, has chalked out plans to turn itself into a marketing outfit where it will outsource business in areas where it lacks expertise. The idea is to combine technical aspects, with more focus on economics of businesses. Xcelris Labs director Aditya Handa told ET that most of the existing contract research companies focus on the technical aspect, and the business aspect becomes secondary.

“We plan to tie up with contract manufacturing companies and companies with specialised services, especially in biotech research services,” he added. Without divulging the names, he said that the company is in talks with few international biotech research companies. Recently, the company announced that it had outsourced the bio analytical /bio equivalence (BA/BE) services to a Mumbai-based clinical research organisation (CRO) company Drug Monitoring & Research Institute (DMRI). Mr Handa said that in this case, his company did not have the expertise of conducting BA/BE studies and clinical trials. Thus, after the molecule is developed by Xcelris, DMRI will conduct those studies and clinical trials.

Similarly, once the molecule completes clinical trials, the manufacturing can be outsourced to a contract manufacturer if the client so desires. A similar business model will be adopted for biotechnology research too. At present, the company has expertise in contract research for pharmaceutical drugs discovery for generic segment. It also has a small unit to carry out new drug discovery in biotech research. The company also does contract research for injectible and solid orals (drugs). The total Indian drug research market stands at $200 million and is growing at 20% annually. The company is eyeing to generate business of Rs 20 crore in next three years and is targeting Europe, South East Asia, Latin America and the US.
